Chrysalis (2021)

Part 1 of 2, “Chrysalis” is the result of 3 years of collaborative music-making. The title comes from their debut single “Metamorphosis,” and is representative of the growth Kiana & the Sun Kings have undergone as a group and as individuals throughout the project.

Each track communicates a different facet of the human condition - survival, love, oppression, and evolution. “Chrysalis” was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time where collaboration, community, and compassion were of the utmost importance. “I’ve poured myself and my most vulnerable experiences into these tunes in hopes that they’ll speak to someone in whatever way that person may need,” lead vocalist and lyricist Kiana Del admits. These pieces combine the technical aspect of jazz with pop melodies, soul, and R&B grooves, solidifying their place in the ever-expanding world of innovative students of jazz.
